10 Must See Sites in Portugal
Welcome to Lisbon, the vibrant capital of Portugal! Nestled on the western coast of the Iberian Peninsula, Lisbon is a city that boasts a rich history, diverse culture, and breathtaking architecture. From its iconic hills, narrow alleys, and charming cobblestone streets to its delicious cuisine and warm hospitality, Lisbon offers an unforgettable experience for every traveler. I consider Lisbon to be my home away from home so I am super excited to dive into some of my favorite places to visit whenever I am in the beautiful country.
In this travel destination guide, we will explore the top attractions, my favorite must-visit neighborhoods, and culinary delights that make Lisbon a perfect destination for your next adventure.
Top Attractions
Belém Tower (Torre de Belém)
This iconic fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Portugal's maritime heritage. Located on the banks of the Tagus River, Belém Tower is a stunning example of Manueline architecture, with its intricate details and impressive tower. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the river and the city. I personally LOVE Belem tower so much that I visited it twice in my 2 week trip to Portugal! Make sure while you’re in Belem you stop by Pasteis de Belem and try the Belem-style Pastel De Nata, a true gem!

Another UNESCO World Heritage site, the Jerónimos Monastery is a masterpiece of Manueline architecture and a must-visit attraction in Belem, Lisbon. Explore its grand cloisters, ornate chapels, and beautiful gardens, and marvel at the stunning craftsmanship and history of this historic site. I found this monastery to be incredibly peaceful and enjoyed taking in the serenity that this site naturally brings.

Alfama
The oldest neighborhood in Lisbon, Alfama is a maze of narrow alleys, steep stairs, and colorful houses that exude a unique charm. Get lost in its labyrinthine streets, discover hidden viewpoints, and immerse yourself in the local culture and music. Don't miss the iconic São Jorge Castle (Castelo de São Jorge), which offers breathtaking views of the city! And of course, be sure to take a picture in front of the iconic red brick topped houses!

LX Factory
A trendy creative hub located in a former industrial complex, LX Factory is a vibrant cultural and gastronomic destination. Explore its shops, art galleries, street art, and enjoy a wide range of dining options, from trendy cafes to hip restaurants. It's a great place to experience Lisbon's contemporary cultural scene.

Belem Cultural Center (Centro Cultural de Belém)
If you're a fan of art and culture, the Belem Cultural Center is a must-visit. This modern cultural complex hosts a variety of exhibitions, concerts, and performances, and houses the Berardo Collection Museum, which features an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art. As an art and museum lover myself, I spent roughly two hour exploring the three story masterpiece of a museum that is the Berardo Collection Museum. In my second trip to Belem, I was made sure to take in the wonderful art pieces one last time as I was still in this magnificent country! I highly recommend this museum, and there are wonderful attendants there that provide history and insight into the artwork.
Must-Visit Neighborhoods
Bairro Alto
This is one of my personal faves. If you enjoy nightlife, bar crawls, live music, and upbeat clubs, Bairro Alto is a must-visit for your trip to Portugal! Known for its lively nightlife and bohemian atmosphere, Bairro Alto is a historic neighborhood that comes alive after dark. Explore its narrow streets lined with colorful houses, trendy bars, and live music venues. It's the perfect place to experience Lisbon's vibrant nightlife and mingle with locals and fellow travelers alike. Pro tip: Put your heels away as you’re going to want to wear sneakers in this neighborhood! There will be lots of walking and some hill climbing so it’s best to be both stylish and comfortable!

Baixa
The downtown area of Lisbon, Baixa is known for its grand squares, wide avenues, and elegant architecture. Take a stroll along Rua Augusta, the main pedestrian street, and marvel at the historic buildings and beautiful squares, such as Rossio and Praça do Comércio—one of Europe’s largest squares, and my personal favorite place to go for a walk by the Tagus River. Don't forget to try the famous Portuguese custard tarts (pastéis de nata) at the iconic Pastelaria de Belém!
Chiado
A trendy neighborhood known for its fashionable boutiques, cafes, and theaters, Chiado is a cultural and commercial hub in Lisbon. Explore its charming streets, browse through its unique shops, and visit the historic Café A Brasileira, a famous coffeehouse that once attracted writers and intellectuals. Pro tip: Chiado sits atop a hill so be prepared for some light climbing and wear comfortable shoes!

Cascais
Nestled along the sparkling Atlantic coastline, Cascais is the perfect blend of charm and sophistication. This picturesque neighborhood, just a short train ride from Lisbon, offers a delightful escape with its sandy beaches, scenic promenades, and vibrant marina. Stroll through the cobbled streets of the historic center, where you'll find an array of boutiques, art galleries, and alfresco cafés. Cascais is also home to the striking Boca do Inferno, a dramatic cliff formation that’s a must-see. Whether you're savoring fresh seafood at a seaside restaurant or exploring the lush gardens of Parque Marechal Carmona, Cascais promises a day of relaxation and beauty.
Sintra
Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is like stepping into a fairytale. This enchanting town, located in the lush hills just outside Lisbon, is famed for its whimsical palaces, mystical forests, and panoramic views. The iconic Pena Palace, with its vivid colors and eclectic architecture, looks straight out of a storybook, while the Moorish Castle offers a journey back in time with its ancient ruins and breathtaking vistas. Wander through the romantic gardens of Quinta da Regaleira, where secret tunnels and symbolic sculptures await discovery. With its dreamy ambiance and rich history, Sintra is a magical neighborhood that captivates the hearts of all who visit.
