Booking.com vs. VRBO: Which One Should Solo Travelers Actually Use?

When I was planning a recent trip to Lisbon, I found myself torn between two listings: a charming apartment on VRBO with flexible cancellation, and an aparthotel on Booking.com with a Genius discount I couldn't pass up. I ended up going with Booking.com for that trip, but the choice got me thinking about how these two platforms actually stack up for solo travelers.
What each is built for
Booking.com is my go-to for hotels and short stays. Its filtering system makes it easy to narrow down exactly what you're looking for, whether that's location, price, or amenities. VRBO shines for unique or longer stays, think full apartments, vacation homes, and properties where you want more space and flexibility than a standard hotel room.
What worked well
On Booking.com, the discounts made a real difference. If you have a Genius membership (or even without one), it's worth checking every property for available discounts, especially weekly rates if you're staying longer. On VRBO, the flexible cancellation policy on my apartment option gave me peace of mind while I was still finalizing my plans.
What to watch for
Cancellation policies vary widely on both platforms, so always check the fine print before you book, not after. This is especially true if your travel plans have any chance of shifting.
The other thing worth knowing: if you have questions before booking, like about amenities, house rules, or the exact location, VRBO makes it easy to message the host directly from the listing page before you commit. Booking.com is hit or miss here. Some listings let you send a message before booking, but many don't, and the more reliable way to actually reach the property is often after you've already booked. If pre-booking questions matter to you, that gives VRBO a slight edge.
Who it's best for
If you want a straightforward hotel stay with strong discount potential, Booking.com is hard to beat. If you're looking for more space, a longer stay, or want to ask questions before locking anything in, VRBO is worth a closer look.
